From Garden Gate to Shakey Bridge: A Summer Meander
The white rambling rose that spills over Pippins’ garden fence has truly outdone itself this year! Covered in blooms and carrying a wonderful scent, it’s the first cheerful hello to greet you as you arrive. Beyond the rose itself, the garden has felt especially vibrant so far this year. Flowers up the steps have burst into bloom, adding splashes of colour and softness all around the cottage. It’s been one of those years where everything seems to flourish at once, with new flowers opening almost daily.
Whether you’re arriving for the first time or stepping outside with a morning coffee, the garden feels full of life — a simple reminder to slow down and enjoy the small, beautiful details that make staying at Pippins so special.

At this time of the year while the rain and snow of winter are a distant memory, it’s a joy to walk down the hill to visit the remote church of St Michael’s beside the River Ithon. Step inside, out of the glare of the sun, and allow the peaceful stillness to wash over you. Sit for a while, rest and listen. The only sounds you might hear are a few squabbling jackdaws outside, but otherwise all is silence.
The views from the churchyard are truly inspiring, looking over the lush, green valley of the Ithon. It’s fascinating to wander amongst the ancient tombstones, surrounded by history, paying quiet homage to the people of the past. Take note of the yew trees - they are thought to be over 1,000 years old!

After the solitude of the church, we continue our journey further down the hill, saying “hello” to the sheep who might be resting in the shade and who scramble away as you approach. Shakey Bridge is ahead, and here, if you are quiet and have some patience, you might see a Dipper fishing in the river, or even the brilliant flash of a Kingfisher as he dives for his lunch.
The river is also sometimes home to Goosanders, Canada Geese and Mallards, but today there are none to be seen. We need to come again and explore further, but for now we will turn around and head back up the hill to our cosy and comfortable retreat in Pippins. Perhaps a cup of tea and a few slices of cake have been earned – we need a small reward for the walk back up the hill!
